The Art of St. Louis Aviation Artist John Matthews

Art Inspired by a Love of Military Aviation

I’ve had a passion for military aviation since I was young. It was fueled by reading countless books about the great aircraft that protected our country in peace and in war, and achieved incredible performance records.

I grew up watching McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms, North American F-100 Super Sabers, and other military aircraft flying overhead. Living so close to the McDonnell Douglas plant, and the 131st Fighter Wing at Lambert Field, there were always planes in the air. Plenty to fuel a kid’s active imagination.

Traditional Artwork Meets the Digital Age

Over the years I learned to draw, paint, and then to create 3D digital models of my favorite planes. I began creating digital paintings, which incorporated light, form, color, and composition in the same manner as “traditional” artwork. I combine traditional artistic principles with 3D modeling to create realistic digital paintings. Many have asked, “Is that a photograph?”

I’ve featured much of my catalog of finished work here in my portfolio for you to see. If you desire, you can buy limited edition giclée prints of my work through my website store. I’ve also made my work available through Fine Art America. Please take a look around and reach out to me via email with any questions or commission requests.

Safe skies!
